Paint & Materials FAQ
Questions about the paints, coatings, and materials we use. From Italian imports to low-VOC options, learn what goes on your walls.
- What paint brands do you use?
- We use Benjamin Moore, Keim and C2 Paint for interior walls, Renner and ALCEA for cabinet coatings, Livos for natural plant-based stain finishes, and Metropolis and Novocolor for decorative work. Each brand is selected for a specific purpose. We do not use one generic paint for everything.
- Are your paints low-VOC or zero-VOC?
- C2 Paint is low-VOC; Below BC standards. Livos plant-based finishes from Germany are naturally low in volatile compounds. For clients who need zero-VOC options - nurseries, homes with allergies, chemically sensitive spaces - we have solutions that deliver full colour and durability without the fumes such as Keim.
- What is the best paint for kitchens and bathrooms?
- Kitchens and bathrooms need moisture-resistant coatings. We typically use high humidity rated lines from Benjamin Moore or C2 Paint in these rooms. For professional cabinet coatings and refinish projects we use 2k coatings from Renner, Alcea and Acroma Pro as they cure harder and resist steam, chemicals and abrasion far better than standard paints.
- How do I choose the right finish or sheen?
- Flat and matte finishes hide imperfections and work well on ceilings and low-traffic walls. Eggshell is the most popular for living spaces - easy to clean with a subtle warmth. Satin and semi-gloss go on trim, doors, kitchens, and bathrooms where durability matters most.
- Why is primer important?
- Primer seals the surface, blocks stains, and gives the topcoat something to bond to. Skipping primer leads to uneven colour, poor coverage, and peeling. On new drywall, wood, or repaired surfaces, primer is not optional - it is the foundation of a lasting paint job.
- What are Italian paints and why do you use them?
- Italian coatings from Renner, ALCEA, Metropolis, and Novocolor are formulated for professional finishing. They cure harder, spray smoother, and produce richer colour depth than most domestic products. We import them specifically for cabinet work and decorative finishes where quality is visible every day.
- Do you carry paint for people with chemical sensitivities?
- Yes. Keim is manufactured without synthetic solvents. They are a strong choice for clients with MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity), respiratory concerns, or young children and they carry the highest cradle to cradle ratings for a paint. We can walk you through the options during your estimate visit.
- Can I supply my own paint?
- We typically supply all coatings for our projects. Products are selected based on the specific surface, environment, and desired finish to ensure proper adhesion and long-term performance.
